Centurions News · Sports Journalism Trip with High School Nation

Cicero Prep was offered an amazing opportunity last week when four of our scholars were able to travel to Glendale and interview Major League Baseball players at Spring Training!

Getting up early and taking a trip out West wasn’t part of a normal day for Cicero Prep scholars Ariadna Flores, Josh Bleimeyer, Parker Zidel, and Grace Charm. The cold morning and anticipation was clear as the group was preparing to meet superstars in the baseball world.

Being at Camelback Ranch Ballpark, home to the LA Dodgers and Chicago White Sox during Spring Training, at times felt overwhelming. As the scholars continued to learn how to approach and talk with these sports stars the interviews began to take shape.

Getting to interview World Series starting pitchers, a Strength and Conditioning Director, an MLB manager, as well as a starting 3rd baseman in his native language, were all incredible experiences that won’t soon be forgotten! We must pass on a huge thank you to the High School Nation program for putting this together for us.

Seeing the courage and preparation put in by our scholars was truly a joy. Working a morning in the life of a sports journalist wasn’t easy, and they excelled. By reaching out to ask for interviews, amazing opportunities opened up to us throughout our time at the teams club houses. Closing out the day watching opening day for Spring Training and seeing the stars they had just interviewed hit home runs, make amazing defensive plays, and even make some errors, really brought the day full circle.

Spending some time with these incredible scholars and watching them soak in a day full of incredible opportunities reminded me why any of us are in the education field. We see the future of our world taking shape before our very eyes. I, for one, am more than happy that the future rests in the hands of Cicero Prep scholars.
