Game Recap

The Cicero Prep Varsity Volleyball Cardinal Team took on the EVAC Eagles in their Homecoming Match on Friday. The stage was set for an exciting night as fans for both teams packed the stands knowing the outcome of the match was a conference championship. The Lady Centurions jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first set following kills by Sophomore Jessica Skemp, Freshman Taylor Peters, Sophomore Kruthy Shankar, and Freshman Raegan Peters, a block by Skemp, and a serving ace by Sophomore Ari Flores. Freshman libero Qin Nebgen had 9 digs and Cicero Prep went on to win the set 25-16. The Lady Centurions continued to play strong but EVAC was able to come from behind in the next two sets, winning both sets 25-23. In the 4th set, T. Peters rattled off 4 consecutive serving aces to put the Centurions in the lead at 15-12. Cicero Prep continued to hold the lead and a kill by Freshman Anna Gilligan followed by an ace by R. Peters sealed the victory, taking the match into a 5th and final set. Skemp jump started the 5th set with a serving ace, followed by a block by Gilligan and a second ace from Skemp, putting the Centurions ahead 3-0. Following a perfect pass by Nebgen, R. Peters came through with a kill and then an ace of her own, putting the score at 5-1. The Lady Centurions continued to rally as a team scoring on a kill and dump from T. Peters, a tip from Flores and another kill from Skemp, bringing Shankar up to serve with a score of 11-6. With a Conference Championship on the line, Shankar’s confidence never wavered from the serving line. Shankar put the next 3 serves in and with a block from Gilligan, the score was 14-6. Following an EVAC timeout, Shankar put in the final serve and Skemp made the final kill to give Cicero Prep a 15-6 win and Conference Championship. Cicero Prep finishes their regular season play with a #2 seed in the CAA High School Varsity Division 2 State Volleyball Championship Tournament. Their ranking earns them a bye in the first round of matches moving them directly into a quarterfinal playoff match on Thursday, October 26th at 5:30pm.
